Rare Animals

Information about Maine’s rare, threatened, and endangered animal species is maintained by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. As of 1997, 47 species of fish and wildlife are listed as endangered or threatened in Maine, either under Maine's Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Endangered Species Act, or both.

For information about these species, the Maine Endangered Species Act, and how a species becomes listed, please visit the State of Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife web site.

Additional information about rare, threatened, and endangered animal species at the state, national, and global level is available through NatureServe.
