Information Requests and Project Review

The Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP) offers many services related to information about rare and exemplary botanical features (rare plants, rare and exemplary natural communities).

Site Review

MNAP offers environmental site review services for many types of projects. Our review involves examining maps, manual and computerized records, other sources of information such as scientific articles or published references, and the personal knowledge of staff or cooperating experts for information on rare and exemplary botanical features in the project area. Typical reviews include:

To submit review materials, please send a brief cover letter describing the project and a map showing the location of the project to: Information Manager, Maine Natural Areas Program, State House Station #93, 157 Hospital Street, Augusta, ME 04333. You may also submit review materials electronically by emailing us.

Please note that site review services may be subject to processing fees. See a summary of MNAP’s fee structure [MS Word][HTML].

For information on wildlife species and animal habitats, contact the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

GIS Data

MNAP maintains much of its information in a geographic information system (GIS). Data is available for rare and exemplary botanical features, large undeveloped blocks of land, and riparian areas.

To submit a request for GIS data, please send a letter describing the intended use of the data and a .shp file or map of the project area to: GIS Manager, Maine Natural Areas Program, State House Station #93, 157 Hospital Street, Augusta, ME 04333. You may submit a GIS data request electronically by emailing us.

Note: GIS data for project areas in the organized towns of Maine is available to anyone requesting it. A subset of data (clipped to the requestor’s specifications) is provided. GIS data in the unorganized towns (i.e. LURC jurisdiction) is available based on landowner permission. Data can be provided by the landowner directly or by MNAP if permission is granted.

Some fees may apply. See a summary of MNAP’s fee structure [MS Word][HTML].
